IT’S PANTO TIME!

OH, YES IT IS!

 

CINDERELLA

I am pleased to report that all is progressing satisfactorily and, given the completion of a couple of outstanding items, might even come together on schedule.  The music will be sorted soon, trust me.  Rehearsals are going well, so far, and providing that there are no more cast changes (cough), we should soon all be word perfect and starting to concentrate on the character relationships and delivery.  We really want this to be a good show but we can only produce that if everyone is committed, supportive and working as a team. This means that your attendance to rehearsals is crucial, as is your enthusiasm, work rate and (probably) tolerance.  While on the subject, there is a very important rehearsal on the 1st of September where we will be starting the choreography, and all falling over one another, so please be there.  Thanks to everyone for their hard work and support so far.       

David

 

David is clearly enthusiastic about directing Double Act’s version of Cinderella for November 27th, 28th, 29th.

As he says this is a team effort so we must provide strong support to him for his first directing role with us.  He is coming along nicely so far, and we are at the same stage as we ever are in rehearsals.  What he may lack in confidence and assertiveness we must make up for with our consistent support, attention and concentration.

No doubt all those who are not taking part this year have valid reasons but it is a great shame, and far from encouraging, that so many have decided to ‘take time off’ at the same time!

But this does mean that it is the perfect opportunity for new talent to come along and join in – there could still be some small parts to fill and of course we really need a chorus – which is always fantastic fun!

Murder walk 2008

Murderlicious!  What a brilliant success!  Dougal’s script was highly entertaining, with lot’s of topical references and just the right length with plenty of surprises and an all action finale!

We had about 415 paying customers and took over £2300 which after expenses and the

National Trust’s cut means we have made a profit of over £1600!

What is more we have had nothing but positive feedback and praise for all concerned.  So, well done all!

The weather threatened at times but just held off – so we still haven’t ever lost a Murder Walk to bad weather!

Congratulations once again and although I know all who took part really enjoyed it,

it is a big commitment, so we will have a well earned rest next summer.

We will of course be back in 2010!  So put these possible dates in your diaries now!

July 19th, 21st, 26th, 28th and August 9th, 11th, 16th, 18th, 22nd, 24th 2010.

 

SUBS REMINDER

There are unfortunately a few of you involved in this years pantomime who have yet to pay their annual subs and hand in your details sheets.  Christine will no doubt be chasing you up in September but it is essential that you join so that you are covered by our insurance.

Yes, it’s still only £5 for adults and a measly £1 for younger persons in full time education.

Which is why we also ask for 50p in the pot each time you attend a meeting to help pay for the hall

        the hire charge for each evening is £12 which we need to cover if we can.

        If you haven’t yet paid for your Cinderella script you will be chased for that too!  

 

mEETINGS IN 2009

We re-start on January 5th 2009 at 7.00pm in the Village Hall as usual.

????????       But what will we be doing?        ??????????

A very good question – and one that the committee will have to find answers to before the panto.

Are there any Workshops you would like?  What could we do for Corfest 09?  Shall we rehearse for Blyton?

If you have any ideas, big or small, please feel free to let us know during the panto rehearsals.

Enid Blyton event

 Thursday 28th may 2009

As mentioned above, there is a chance that we might be involved in the Enid Blyton event

 due to take place inside the Castle on Thursday 28th May 2009.

We have been asked to create some dramatic vignettes that can be used as possible

 problem solvers for people visiting the castle and taking part in a quiz.

There will be a meeting in September for everyone remotely interested to come along with ideas.

 Taking part will require you to be available on a week-day in the school half-term week at the end of May.

 

Coffee Morning

14th February 2009

One of our main fund raisers - so let’s have a good turnout!

Get some cakes made, bring a raffle prize, grab some stuff to sell and turn up soon after 9.00am

 to help set up and then man the stalls please.  Bring all your friends & relatives.  Doors open 10.30am.

AGM - 2nd March at 8.30pm.

This is the most likely date for the AGM this year – so note it in your diaries.

If you have any interest in the future of Double Act you must attend this meeting.

It won’t take very long and we do need new committee members.

This is your chance to really influence what we do each year.

 

Spring barn dance

25th April 2009 – 7.30pm

After last years fantastic success we have invited The Hat Band back.

This time we will provide a set Ploughman’s meal and of course will need prizes for the good old raffle.

Everyone attending will need to buy a ticket – including all members.

Look out for more details nearer the time.

 

May Bank Holiday

At present we are not planning anything on the May Day bank holiday Monday.

MERRY CHRISTMAS

& HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

 

Trouble DOUBLED

What can I say?  What a roller coaster ride of a production!  At least the cast were relatively settled this year with no “drop-outs” causing chaos during rehearsals.  As usual most lines were learnt at the last minute and we never did get a proper version of the new song!  We had a good first night with a very responsive audience, a technically disastrous Friday night, a minimalist matinee but a fantastic climactic last night! 

This all led to an overall successful “new play” that turned in a respectable profit.

Well done, to all involved particularly those who turned out to help set up and clear up.

We really do need other people to come forward to take on all those jobs that Peter finds himself having to take over a week off work to get done – without which the show would not happen.

Our Children in Need collection raised £132.49

There will be a version available to watch as usual, probably a DVD (possible video copies)

So, start badgering Peter for a copy - £6 in cash - of which £5 goes to Double Act funds.

 

SILLY CINDERS NIGHT

We re-start on January 7th 2008 at 7.00pm in the Village Hall as usual.

Silly Cinders Night – a light hearted drama workshop including many Cinderella based items to get involved in.

Ugly Sister’s make up & wigs – a 5 minute ‘one liner’ version of Cinderella – create an instant rap version – improvise a scene from a comic version of the panto – how do you transform Cinders into a princess?

Lots of fun to get involved in no matter what your age or ability.

More members of all ages are needed – on or off stage.  So please make sure you put the enclosed poster somewhere obvious and make a concerted attempt to encourage others to come along to Silly Cinders Night.

The pantomime next November will need a lot more help backstage and more youngsters on stage!

May Bank Holiday

As mentioned already we are “resting” our usual May bank holiday event this year and are running

the Barn Dance mentioned above.

 

Murder walk

Yes, the Murder Walk is back with a vengeance this summer.

Once again, it will be in the castle grounds in conjunction with the National Trust.

This time it takes place soon after the death of King John after he had lost the crown jewels crossing The Wash.

This one has been written by Dougal and is just about ready for another read through.

Rehearsals will take place during spring 2008 and performances will be (mostly) on Monday & Wednesday

evenings on July 21st, 23rd, 28th, 30th  & August 12th, 13th 2008.

There will also be a free “dress rehearsal” on Friday 13th June as part of the new “Corfest 08”.

Pete (480109) will be organising as usual so if you are interested in getting involved ring him.

(“Corfest 08” could be resurrecting a Corfe Carnival procession so we may want to do a float?)

27th, 28th & 29th November 2008

“Cinderella”

Yes, it’s Panto time again!  Oh, no it isn’t!  Oh, yes it is!

It looks as though readings and auditions will take place on 12th & 19th May 2008.

As usual, the rehearsals will take place every Monday evening until schools break up for the summer holidays and then every Sunday & Monday evening once the school term restarts in September.

We will need more folk on and off stage for this and there is always room for lots of youngsters.

We are letting our very able A level drama student David loose to direct this one!

We wish him every success and expect everyone to give him as much help and support as they possibly can.

HAVE A GREAT SUMMER

 

SHED PAINT AND BBQ

Yes it’s only on this Saturday!!!!  June 9th starting at 10.00am and finishing off with a Barbeque once the shed is painted and tidied.  Paint and brushes and hot coals will be supplied but please bring whatever you want to cook, eat and drink!

Anyone involved with costumes would be especially welcome as there are still various bags of clothes that were left just inside the door after Christmas Carol that still need sorting out.

So – see you all there on Saturday at 10.00am – the more that come the quicker we get on with the barbeque!

 

THEATRE TRIP – july 6th

No trip to The Globe this year – but we are booking tickets to see All’s well That Ends Well at the Tivoli Theatre in Wimborne on Friday 6th July to be performed by the excellent Bristol Young Vic company.

Tickets are limited on a first come first served basis – so please contact Mike 480323.  Tickets will cost £10.50 each.

Transport will be arranged between all those going in various cars.

15, 16 & 17th November 2007

Auditions have taken place – and casting is in progress!

Peter intends to inform you all this weekend – so find out first at the BBQ!

Everyone hoping to be involved should come along next Monday 11th June at 7pm to confirm their parts and hear the new song and dance number that has been specially commissioned for the show.

If you can’t make that night and still wish to be involved – ring Pete (480109)

We will then prepare for the next key date of June 25th at 7pm when we will be recording a new soundtrack for The Mad Miller of Wareham scenes that we will be using in video form during the show.

So even if you may not be around for the show in November – this is a chance to still “appear” in the 10th Anniversary production.

We will blocking out the scenes on July 2nd, 9th, and 16th.

Then starting in earnest back to full Monday and Sunday evening rehearsals from September 3rd.

So spend a nice relaxing summer getting those lines learnt!

 

FUNDRAISING

Thanks to all who helped and supported the successful coffee morning and of course to those that supported our Western Evening. 

A great time was had by all those that attended.

Those that went home with left over food need to pay Keith the going rate please.

We are considering an Easter Barn Dance next year (2008) and giving the May bank holiday a rest.  So we hope to see many more of you there.

A new walk has been written by Dougal for the summer of 2008.

It should be great fun – with a severed head, stolen crown jewels, strange tongues and a well for disposing of headless bodies!

Anyone will be welcome to join in as crowd, when they can, to give it more colour.

Is there anyone who can strum a stringed instrument or would like to learn? 

We need a minstrel who tries to entertain the crowd briefly between scenes

 – not always successfully!

Rehearsals will take place during spring 2008 and performances will be on Monday & Wednesday evenings on July 16th, 23rd, 28th, 30th  & August 11th, 13th 2008.

 

Have a great summer break and behave yourselves or at least don’t get caught!

MERRY CHRISTMAS & A HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

Christmas carol

What a great production!  We hope you enjoyed taking part as much as our audiences have told us they enjoyed watching it.  Well done to Christine and everyone involved.  Yes, we made a profit!

You may not have realised it but the play was the first outing for the new sound equipment that we recently purchased and should give us even more options for the future. It certainly added even more whammy to Marley’s ghost!

Our Children in Need collection raised £155.53!

There will be a video available as usual – so start badgering Peter with your blank tapes (2 hours) and £6’s in cash - of which £5 goes to Double Act funds.

MEETINGS IN 2007

We re-start on January 8th 2007 at 7.00pm in the Village Hall as usual.

This year is our 10th anniversary as “Double Act” so let’s make it a good one!

Our May event will be a fund raising entertainment evening which this year will have a “Western” theme – maybe with a cowboy saloon setting – yeehah! 

So come along in January with ideas for short plays, acts, sketches or songs that you would like to do.

During the spring we will also be trying to record a new soundtrack for some short scenes from“The Mad Miller of Wareham ” that will be played as videos in our main November production.

Future meetings will therefore be on:-

February 5th - March 5th & April 2nd  - but may become fortnightly or even weekly after March 5th to give rehearsal time for the May event.  Details will follow at that time - but plenty to be involved in!

May Bank Holiday

Monday 7th May – 7.30pm

As mentioned already our May event will have a “Western” theme. So we hope you will all join in with preparing items to be included. The event will be coordinated by Ann, Mike and Barry but it will be up to you to suggest ideas and organise your own sketches, songs, acts or whatever. We will, of course, all be there to help guide you and give advice but this is primarily your chance to show us all what you can do!

On the night we will expect you to bring along as many people as you can as well as some food to go towards the buffet that we lay on for everyone.

After much thought and discussion it has been decided to give the Murder Walk a miss again this year but it will be back, and in the Castle, in 2008! If you think you will be around to take part then please let Peter know as there will hopefully be a meeting on May 14th 2007 to make arrangements and read through the script that is nearly written. It appears that we may have to construct a fake “well” this time!

“trouble doubled”

For our tenth anniversary (Wow!) we have written a new comedy drama play that incorporates scenes from our previous home grown productions (to avoid copyright charges!). It is about a drama group called, strangely enough, Double Act who, are on hard times and struggling against authority and other obstacles to stage their next production when things get even worse  with the discovery of a dead body during a committee meeting! 

There are quite a number of strong leading roles and plenty to do for everyone else to re-enact some very dramatic scenes from older productions as well as a new show stopping song and dance number!

Reading the play through and casting is likely to take place during May 2007 with rehearsals starting in June as the performances are mid November again.

So stay in touch for more details!

November Approaches!

Casting has taken place for “A Christmas Carol” to be played November 16th, 17th &18th. There are still characters requiring actors. So if you still would like to take part, ring Christine Kemp 01929 480007. This splendid work of Charles Dickens, is well known and the audience will notice if we get our words wrong, so learn your parts well.

It is essential that everybody should attend every rehearsal! If you are not required on stage, you are required as part of the chorus!  Please do not let yourselves, Christine and the rest of the cast down, be there. The last rehearsal was on July 17th & we commence again on Monday September 4th at 7pm, be there! 

Next year being “Double Act's” 10th anniversary, a “review is being written to include parts of all our “home grown” productions so far. The writing is going well and it looks to be a rip roaring piece of entertainment.  

Trip to “The Globe”, on Saturday 9th September, to see “Anthony and Cleopatra”. As always I am sure it will be an excellent show. Do not forget to check with the schedule Teresa sent to you with the pick up points and times.  

Fund raising events so far this year have been, the coffee morning in February, the quiz and beetle drive in May and the stall at the Parish Fete in August. We thank everyone who organised and helped with these events.

No. 30                                                               Newsletter                                                         January 2006

 Greetings!

2005, although a busy year for Double Act, financially it did not put us in a position to take over the West End. However, we did put on a cracking Nautical Night in May, an amazing Murder Mystery in July and August and a Pantomime to die for in November. In addition to this a number of young people performed on stage for the first time, some others had a speaking part for the first time and others had took lead parts for the first time. Of course we must not forget the brave effort of David Welstead as assistant director.

We must give credit to Peter Smith, for without Peter we would have sadly lacked important guidance and a lot of hard work that he put into every thing that we did.

Peter has gone mad this year and has already prepared the video.  So if you want a copy please let him have £7 (preferably £2 in cash at least) & he will make a copy for you.  No blank tapes are required this year & the usual £5 will go to Double Act funds.  As an extra bonus feature you will get this years Murder in the Castle – absolutely free! 

This year we have decided to use the first few months of sessions as workshops. Starting on the 9th January with gum- boot dancing! (Well I don’t know either,) but as someone who wears out two pairs of wellies a year I’m as mystified as you probably are. So, turn up with your best wellies at 7pm.

The next 2 or 3 workshops have yet to be arranged but we are hoping to include make-up, singing and puppet making, information will become available as we have it.  

On the May 1st bank holiday we are planning to have a “quiz and beetle drive evening”. This is the time to get all of your general knowledge books out and start revising!  

All are welcome to our workshop sessions, and of course we are always pleased to welcome visitors and potential new members.  

June will see the start of casting and rehearsing for our main production of Peter Pan on 16, 17 & 18th of November. This of course will be our main effort for the year, which will take a lot of planning and hard work. For every minute the performance takes, two – three hours go into script adaptation, production meetings, set design, set construction and scenery painting. Not to mention rehearsals!  

Do not get me wrong, these jobs are very fulfilling and are on the most part a lot of fun. Especially working as a team, when the jokes flow and the general humour makes the time fly by.  

The first committee meeting will be on January 9th after the workshop and it is expected that Double Act Annual General Meeting will be in March. This of course will be communicated to you in advance. So listen at the workshop meetings, read notes that are handed to you and read your emails.  

This does also mean that subscriptions will become due from January so don’t forget your £5 for adults and £1 for youngsters in full time education.  Unless you are a paid up member you are not covered by our insurance and therefore cannot take part in anything.

We are also always happy to have new committee members to help run the group and decide on it’s future program – so come along to the AGM and volunteer.  

We are also always open to suggestions as to future productions or workshops.

We have provisional plans for a 10 year anniversary special in 2007 that needs putting together from past home grown productions and a locally based World War II play (possibly a thriller) that also needs writing.  You may not want to be on stage but maybe you’d like to have a go at writing? We tend to write as a group with meetings that are invariably great fun as daft ideas get thrown about to get a plot and characters sorted out, and then we write a scene each and finally edit it all together.  Lets us know if you are interested.  

This year our coffee morning in the village hall will be February 25th when we look forward to seeing you all.  

After clearing up the panto there were a few articles left that need a home namely some Navy blue fleecy lined suede gloves + knitted light blue & white scarf + yellowish garden gloves.

Hi playmates, the year is racing on toward our autumn production time. Time to really knuckle down to learning lines and remembering cues.

 

Treasure Island the Panto

Performances on November ~ 18th & 19th 2005

First meeting in September 5th 7.30 9.OOpm ALL must be there!

This should be good fun with just about everyone cross dressing!

Captain Pete is still optimistic about you all having tried to learn your lines over the holidays and reminds you that no scripts will be allowed on deck from October 9th onwards. The ships carpenters and sail makers are already hard at work preparing the vessel for the voyage so we just need the crew to be all ship shape! There is so much to be done by the crew using both hands on deck that we must cast off the scripts as soon as possible in order to get the production sailing along breezily rather that floundering in the doldrums. So if you want to splice the main brace at the after show party whilst anchored in calm waters of a sunny lagoon rather than scrambling over the rocks on which it has run aground then we all need to heave together to set full sail in a fair wind!

 

Murder Walk & Picnic

What a success again! All nights sold out, some weeks before! Although the limited numbers seemed a bit meager when spread out picnicking in the outer bailey, things did get a bit tight in the ruins for one or two scenes. Well done to all involved for their hard work at learning lines (with terribly confusing names — blame history!) and dedication to giving up their time in order to squeeze in rehearsals, sometimes in rain & the gale force winds that always seem to occur atop the ruins. Let’s not forget their death scenes, where each tried to outdo the last for death throes. Of course, many thanks must go to the National Trust for their assistance and the great venue! Future suggestions anyone — annually/bi-annually? — weekly/fortnightly? — time of day/week?

Very well done Peter for all your hard work, writing, producing and directing.

Membership Subscriptions

I understand that there are a few of you who have yet to pay your membership subscriptions to Keith for this year. If you are in the panto you must join in order to be covered by our insurance. To remind you Adults are £5 a year and Children £1 — which isn’t a lot for a year!

The children classification includes anyone in full time education.

 

Bullying Project

As some of you may be aware, six of our young ladies (Cherry, Hannah, Holly,

Marial, Sally & Victoria) took part in a video being shot about Bullying by ex

I am aware that some of you may be involved in exams so if you can only make one night please do so. Full rehearsal schedules will be available together with ‘preference’ forms for you to complete each night. If you really cannot come on either night but still want to take part or help please contact me. Hurrah, for the Fabulous Four!

‘Hurrah for the Fabulous Four’ has been an ambitious production and probably one that has included the widest age range so far, from 6 to… never mind, together with some splendid scenery designed by a student member of the cast and a complicated sound track including great number of 1960’s tunes- and some especially written live numbers – which brought back happy memories to many of the audience. Apart from that there were quite the most ingenious pieces of stage mechanism – dare it be said, to grace any Village Hall – the revolving stages which to the amazement of an engineer in the audience revolved without squeak or rattle. How was it done, he asked, when a London theatre could only produce one groaning revolving stage? The answer; modern technology and Smith technique!

It is always a surprise, and relief, to see a production come together during the final week. With the greater security of lines learnt, roles suddenly develop and confidence allows a more relaxed interaction between characters. Thank you actors for many delightful moments. And what a lot of patience is needed to be a member of the crowd, and how the success of a play relies on them! It is difficult to engage in, and then withdraw from, stage action and with only a few lines each, makes this seems natural. Our crowd did so well.

We hope the dancers enjoyed their debut with Double Act and will think of joining us in the future. Each year we loose a lot of our talent to exams, university, and families moving out of the district, so it is good to see the ‘next generation’ coming through, together if possible, with other members of the family.

It was also most encouraging to see so many helpers on Sunday Morning. It takes a long time to get the stage ready but now the volunteers have been come year on year, the business of ’striking’ the set is completed by early afternoon. Thank you to them, and all the other ‘Company Members’, without who there would be no play.

Ann would like to thank the Company very much, not only for a bottle of wine, waiting patiently for Christmas, but also for a most generous token to be spent at a garden centre. When she drew out the bottle, the token was not at first apparent, but discovered later. It will be spent on something special – colourful. Thank You!

First Meeting in 2005

Our first meeting in the New Year will be on Monday 10th January at 7.00pm in Corfe Castle Village Hall as usual. At which we will be discussing our future events and putting together ideas for the Nautical Night in particular. Other booked dates are as follows:-

January – 24th; February – 7th, 21st; March – 7th, 14th; April – 4th, 11th, 18th, 25th;

May - 2nd (Nautical night), 16th, 23rd, 30th; June – 6th, 13th, 20th, 27th; July – 4th, 11th, 18th.

 

AGM

Our Annual General Meeting will take place in February or March once the accounts have been audited. So a separate notice will be given when we have fixed a date.

If you fancy being on the committee please let Peter or Ann know – it’s not very onerous – just a meeting each month after the first evening meeting and it does give you the chance to influence what we do in future.

 

Membership Subscriptions

Due to our re-arrangement of our financial year we have not asked for any membership subscriptions since September 2003. So unsurprisingly we will now be collecting your subs from January. To remind you Adults are £5 a year and Children £1. The children classification includes anyone in full time education. Please start giving your money to Keith as soon as possible.

With a bit of luck we shall now issue a membership card each year, once you paid your subs.

You will need to be a member to vote on any issues at the AGM or to be on the committee.

 

Child Protection Forms

We must have all the blue child protection forms handed back in as soon as possible.

If you are under 18 years old then you should have one signed by your parents.

If you haven’t been given one or have lost it - see Peter.

If you are an adult and want a copy for information – again see Peter.

 

Coffee Morning

Our usual Coffee Morning should take place on February 12th 2005 at the Corfe Castle Village Hall - Starting at 10.30am. We will need help to set up and run stalls and tidy away of course.

If you have an idea for a stall or money raising scam please let us know.

We will also need raffle prizes, cakes, bric-a-brac etc.

 

Nautical Night

In celebration of the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar we present a rousing evening of patriotic fervour! Songs, shanties, charades & short plays. All with a nautical flavour and numerous chances for the ever popular community singing!

A wine & beer bar with a free drink for those in suitable nautical attire! Plus a buffet – for which we will all need to bring something along to create it.

2nd May 2005 at 7.30pm. Corfe Castle Village Hall - Adults £5 – Children £3.50

Murder Walk

Yes, it’s back! The highly acclaimed Double Act Murder Mystery Walk is back in 2005.

This time we are working in co-operation with the National Trust and will be using the Castle itself to stage our event on three Wednesday evenings of July 20th, August 3rd & August 17th 2005.

The intention is to open the gates at 6.30pm for people to bring a picnic to eat in the outer bailey before the "event" starts at 7.15 / 7.30pm. The walk should last about a hour and a half and of course get more atmospheric as twilight approaches, although we do have to be out before dark for safety reasons. The numbers will be restricted to 50 and tickets can be booked in advance for

probably £5 per head, of which the Trust will take 30%. (i.e. £1.50.)

The plot will be set in 1330 during reign of Edward III when he was just 17 and controlled by Isabella (last kings wife – Edward II) & Mortimer (her lover). We shall use all the intrigue, uprising, deposition of the old king, his imprisonment & very unpleasant murder as background. Together with the dastardly trick by Isabella & Mortimer to uncover those against them by starting a rumour that the old king was alive and held at Corfe – rather than having been murdered at Berkley Castle in 1327. As a result a Dominican Friar was sent to investigate & was tricked into ‘seeing’ the old king, which led to the old kings brother, Edmund, swearing allegiance to his ‘dead’ brother and then being beheaded for treason.

Treasure Island the Panto

November 17th, 18th & 19th 2005 (or maybe 24th, 25th, & 26th)

We have found a panto that basically follows the traditional story but throws in a few extra pirate film type clichés (we will probably add others) and has even sillier names for the characters.

So - Yo, ho, ho, and a vast behind! Get your crutches and parrots out!

We will be reading it through and auditioning at our meetings on May 16th & 23rd and then blocking in and song rehearsing weekly on Mondays till July 18th & the summer break.

Then really getting serious from September 5th onwards.

At this point we are still looking for a director – does any want to have a go or know anyone willing to take it on – with all the usual support of course!

Update on ‘Hurrah, for the Fabulous Four’

Over the past few years increasing interest has been shown in the life and writings of Enid Blyton together with her love of the Isle of Purbeck in which so many of her stories take place. David Kemp has dreamed up an original plot, which includes characters modelled on ‘The Famous Five’, taking place when they are in their teens, in the early nineteen sixties. Names of places are lightly disguised in the tradition of other Dorset writers and the play, having followed the vicissitudes of Anne, George (ina), Dick, Julian – and Lupy the dog, ends satisfactorily and happily as Uncle Quentin opts for a mid career change.

We have now started rehearsals for ‘Hurrah for the Fabulous Four!’, a tentative run through before the beginning of the holidays, so we may know what the production difficulties are and where dialogue and action could move more smoothly. We are also sorting out who is going to be a dancer or a singer, the ‘extras’ to the not inconsiderable cast. Unlike a published edition of a play, which explains every actor’s move and often indicates gestures and facial expressions, the moves in a new play have to be worked out as the production develops and ideas thought out at home, may not be effective in rehearsal. Added to which, as in our case, staging, including rostra heights, is not in place until the production week. But that is the fun… and worry of a first performance play, together with all the other production concerns.

Well and Truly Quizumbled!

The evening of May 3rd saw a village hall packed with friends and relations for our action packed Quizumble Night! As usual Peter produced a "different" sort of quiz that kept people on their toes mentally and physically and then rounded it off with some mind blowing mixed up music tracks. After a truly magnificent buffet spread (well done everyone) the audience settled down to a highly entertaining and slick performance of "It’s A jumble Out There!". Even the author, Dougal Dixon, was present and highly impressed to see his creation dusted off and given new life. The cast all performed clearly and well in what is a very difficult and complex short play – so give yourselves a pat on the back! If anyone is interested Peter does have a video recording of the evening available but it is the 35 minute as performed version rather than the 40 minute directors cut version intended! Due to an expertly timed "trim" that didn’t seem to throw anyone, the audience never did find out why the bric-a-brac is called the White Elephant stall! But still another successful and profitable night!

Shed Loads of Storage

From a cold start in January clearing the site for the new shed we were able to keep warm on Sunday afternoon breaking up concrete soil and stone. When all was prepared we had a wheelbarrow party bringing in the concrete from the big mixer parked on the road.

Next came 2.5 tonnes of shed sections and after we had insulated the floor section there was a sheet erection party, this stage was completed in about half a day. But then came the task of insulating and lining the shed to a very high standard.

After the vinyl flooring went down and now the shelving and racking for clothes is proceeding with props and costumes finally being transferred from the "Black Hole" to "The Shed".

KING ARTHUR

This was one of the best productions to date with a lot of positive feedback from the audience. The purchase of the new curtains really gave it the more professional look. With sales of tickets and refreshments we managed to meet all our expenditures, which was excellent as this included the curtains. The quality of acting was exceptional, and it was nice to welcome some new faces. And thanks to all those backstage as well your efforts are much appreciated!

ANNUAL COFFEE MORNING

Our annual coffee morning will be held in the Village Hall, February 14th, at 10.30. Help setting up and managing stalls will be required - if you are able to help, please be there around 09:30 - thanks! We would also like Cakes, toys, bric-a-brac and clothes.

Tables will also be available for £5 each to sell your own stuff!!

MURDER MYSTERY WALK

There will be no walk this summer, but ..............it will be back again in 2005!

QUIZ & COMEDY NIGHT

On the May Bank Holiday (4th May) we will be holding a light hearted quiz, with refreshments accompanied with beer and wine which will be followed by a one act comedy "It’s a Jumble Out There" Its sure to be a good so come along and bring your family and friends with you!

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

We will be holding a AGM this will be for our accounts which will have been audited, this will probably be in March more details will follow shortly.

PROP STORAGE

We need your help in preparing the land for the new shed work has already started, but more help will be appreciated. At present we are working on Sunday Afternoons at 2pm weather permitting at Michael’s 99 East St Corfe Castle. So please come and do your bit or volunteer a fit relative!

2004 NOVEMBER PRODUCTION

Work gathers apace on preparing our new November production under the working title of "Noddy and the Famous 4" – although copyright will probably prevent the use of the word in the final title.

This is to be a pastiche of Enid Blyton stories and a jolly ripping yarn to boot!

The storyline has been drafted and now the scenes just have to be written by our team of ginger beer swilling big kids.

ANNUAL TRIP TO THE GLOBE

Ann is at present looking at the possibilities of going to see "Much ado about nothing " on Sunday 5th September at 1pm, details will be given, when arrangements have been finally been finalised!

KING ARTHUR - A PANTOMIME IN CAMELOT

This year’s performance takes place in Corfe Castle Village Hall on Thursday 20 November, Friday 21 November, and Saturday 22 November.

Rehearsals start for King Arthur - a Pantomime in Camelot in earnest on Sunday 7 September at 6.30 pm in the Village Hall at Corfe Castle.

THIS PANTOMIME SHOULD BE GOOD FUN, WITH LARGER THAN LIFE CHARACTERS, WHICH NEED PLENTY OF OVERACTING FROM THE ENTIRE CAST!

We have a lot to get through before the production (especially the singing and dancing) so it is very important that everyone attends all the rehearsals and arrives promptly. If you really cannot manage one, it is very important that you let Chris know well in advance so that alternative arrangements can be made. (Tel: 01929 480007)

This year all the rehearsals will be in the Village Hall so some have had to be made on Sunday evenings to avoid clashes with other events in the hall.

Please return your sheets for costume sizes as the costumes are already in production and we want them to fit.

It is proposed that the Double Act financial year be amended from August to the 31st December 2003 and that a special AGM be held in March 2004 to hear the audited accounts. Thereafter all subsequent financial years will run from January 1st until 31st December with an AGM in March, once the accounts have been audited.

MURDER MYSTERY WALK

The Anarchy 1141 — a time of open civil war between the supporters of King Stephen and the Empress Matilda who had been promised the crown by old King Henry. Local barons take advantage of the volatile situation to line their pockets by attacking neighbouring towns. Into the seemingly tranquil surroundings of Corfe Castle our four protagonists meet at lunch and events take a terrible turn.

A 4th successful summer of dirty deeds in Corfe has just passed with our Medieval Murder Mystery Walk around Stephen’s Rings and the western side of the Castle. We had good audiences again this season with approximately 100 people joining us for our last performance on Sunday 24 August, and we believe we have made abut £400 to swell our funds to aid us to put on our autumn production. There was a different twist in the tale this year that the populace seemed to enjoy - the participants certainly did!

Our grateful thanks go to all who acted and helped us this year, to St John Ambulance for first aid cover; and especially of course to Peter who conceived, wrote and produced the whole event.

GLOBE VISIT

Another very successful trip look place on Sunday 31 August to see The Taming of the Shrew at London’s Globe Theatre. Everyone enjoyed a very entertaining afternoon watching this favourite Shakespeare play performed by an all-female cast. Very many thanks to Ann for superbly arranging yet another wonderful trip.

Plans are under way to solve some of our storage problems at last.

This will be the last Double Act Newsletter I will be writing as I’ve decided that, as I now seem to have rapidly diminishing time to devote to it (what with being newly married, work, other interests, growing grandchildren. etc), I will be handing Over the task to someone also at the AGM. I have been producing it for almost 13 years for both Double Act and the predecessor Purbeck Community Theatre — so it’s about time to give up! Many thanks to all who have helped me over the years.

OLD TIME MUSIC HALL - VICTORIAN EVENING - MONDAY 5 MAY

What a night of stars! A packed house! A vocal and appreciative audience! What more could we ask for? Loads-a-money! Yes indeed, we made about £525.

Firstly, a huge thank you to all those who helped produce the various ‘acts’, all those who operated front-of-house and with refreshments, all those who helped with costumes and props and, of course, chiefly yourselves for taking part and enjoying yourselves. What a lot of work for one night! But it paid off and a great time was had by all.

If I must (says Peter) single out one performance of the evening, then it was Robin’s. He got the audience warmed up and kept them bubbling with his dubious jokes and generally held the whole evening together. The variety acts all "gave it everything", and turned in great performances, some very creditable, building their parts up to good effect. Even those who felt that something didn’t go perfectly didn’t get flustered, but kept going and finished - all richly deserved the applause they received!

As for Desperate Straits’ - well it nearly brought the house down. Everyone played way over the top and the audience lapped it all up. You could feel the ooze dripping from Sir Jasper, Jack milked his timely arrival with panache, Walter was just, just, well, WET of course, Maud withered beneath Bagg’s leering gaze, James was steadfast beyond belief and the Pembertons manfully rose above their problems created by life’s rich tapestry.

Then rounding off the evening we had a communal sing-a-long-a-David, who withstood the barracking from the audience with great aplomb.

What do we do next year? Suggestions on a postcard please……………

MURDER MYSTERY WALK 2003

SUNDAY 13 JULY SUNDAY 3 AUGUST SUNDAY 24 AUGUST

In spite of the efforts of a few to put stumbling blocks in our way, the walks will continue! To prevent immediate problems, we will be avoiding the common this year, whilst we argue the case against some overbearing conditions being imposed. But negotiations with the National Trust and a local farmer have secured a new route around the "Rings" and to the north of the castle - all with great views of the castle. Naturally the plot details remain a secret, but rest assured there will be a few unexpected twists and turns this year as characters supporting either King Stephen or the Empress Matilda take a stroll around the area.

And this year these Sunday afternoon Murder Mystery Walks will commence at 2.30 pm from previous years’ finishing point at West Mills in the shadow of the Castle itself.

There are still quite a few tickets for sale for this autumn’s theatre trip to Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre in London to see the Taming of the Shrew. PANTO "KING ARTHUR"

THURSDAY 20 to SATURDAY 22 NOVEMBER

There is trouble brewing at Camelot! King Arthur has managed to escape Queen Guinevere’s shopping trip! but she will soon catch up with him. Meanwhile Sally the kitchen maid is desperate to see her love, Squirty the Squire, but discovers he has a new female in his life -Smoulder the baby dragon. When the evil sorceress Morgana arrives with her son Mordred, King Arthur will not listen to Merlin the wizard’s sound advice, and Arthur finds himself in a battle for his throne. Lancelot tights bravely, but when Merlin’s wand is transformed into a toilet brush, who will save him from the fire-breathing dragon?

Camelot is a hilarious world of magical adventure; an Arthurian tale with a twist - so says the author Paul Reakes. And Double Act will be bringing this wonderful spectacular to the Corfe Castle stage in November - don’t miss your chance to take part.

Lots of new people - especially younger people - have expressed a lively interest in this pantomime, and we are always pleased to see new faces. We had so many people turn up to the read-through sessions this month that this has given Chris and cc a most difficult task in choosing people for individual parts. Not only have all the parts been cast but a lot of them are able to have understudies. May such wonderful enthusiasm continue to make this the best Double Act production even

Rehearsals will commence on Monday evenings in June until 21 July, and will continue from the beginning of September on Monday evenings and Sunday afternoons or evenings until the performance dates.

UNFORTUNATELY - SOME BAD NEWS

Some unscrupulous person or persons has become aware of what we keep in the Village Hall attic and has made off with our smoke machine, the midi hi-fl system and our recently acquired sets of music-stand lights. We will of course be bringing the theft to the attention of the Village Hall committee, but I fear we are unlikely to be covered by insurance. It would be lovely to think that whoever’s conscience would be pricked and the items reappear, but I fear that too would be unlikely. Sometimes it seems a very sad world.

VICTORIAN EVENING  MONDAY 5 MAY

An evening of entertainment with a Victorian flavour will take place at 7.30 pm in Corfe Castle Village Hall on the May Day Bank Holiday. This will consist of song and dance, monologues and music, magic and a melodrama, linked together by our compere for the evening.

The melodrama - "Desperate Straits" - directed by Ann and Nicky, is sure to be enjoyed by everyone. And all this for the small ticket cost of £4 for adults and £2.50 for children; the ticket price to include your first drink if you come in Victorian costume.

So tell your family and friends about this evening of entertainment and get them to come and join in the fun. Look out for the posters in April advertising this event.

This summer will see the fourth of our very popular series of Murder Mystery Walks on Corfe Common. This time it is set in the year 1141 in the midst of The Anarchy, a time of civil war between the supporters of King Stephen and the Empress Matilda, backed by her brother Robert, Earl of Gloucester. Although Matilda had been promised the crown by old King Henry, Stephen managed to reach London first on Henry's death and seize the throne in 1135, with the assistance of the royal treasury to buy support. Since then much political manoeuvring has taken place, culminating in Matilda landing in England in 1139. The country is now in open civil war, with local barons taking advantage of the situation to line their own purses, as well as constantly changing sides to suit the ever changing situation as fortune swings between the rival royal factions.

Into this time of distrust and political intrigue comes Edgar de Redvers to investigate the now illegal trade of Simony, the sale of fake holy relics and religious posts. We've decided that our autumn theatre trip will be to Shakespeare's Globe Theatre in London again this year. This will be to the 1.00 pm performance of the Taming of the Shrew, which promises to be another stunning performance in this wonderful venue on the banks of the Thames.

Timings will be similar to previous years, leaving the Purbeck area from approx 7.30 am. The coach has been booked and tickets reserved. All we need now is to fill those seats, so what you have to do now is to telephone Ann on 01929 556148 to secure your seat.

MURDER MYSTERY WALK

After the successes of the last three years, plans are afoot for a 4th Murder Mystery Walk next summer, this time returning to a medieval theme amidst the troubled times of Stephen and Matilda. Rehearsals will start next spring. Watch this space!

FUTURE PRODUCTIONS:

VICTORIAN EVENING OF ENTERTAINMENT

Apart from the MMW, Double Act are hoping to put on a Victorian Good Old Days type evening, including a melodrama or two, for the May Day bank holiday. Rehearsals for this will start on Monday evenings in January, initially once a fortnight.

AUTUMN PRODUCTION 2003

We've decided to put on an established pantomime, mostly likely 'King Arthur' - a pantomime adventure in Camelot by Paul Reakes.

Members of the cast should have already received copies of the rehearsal schedule - please do your best to be punctual, and to let Ann know as soon as possible if you have a problem with any rehearsal date.

WHO RULES BRITANNIA?

Written and produced by David Kemp, this contribution to the Queen's Golden Jubilee celebrations was successfully performed twice in the rather damp and chilly Castle grounds on 3 June, and also during a most enjoyable (and profit-making!) supper evening on 4 June in Corfe Castle Village Hall. Well done everyone for all their efforts in making this another successful Double Act event.

VICTORIAN MURDER MYSTERY WALK

This year saw the third summer of Murder Mystery Walks in Corfe Castle - this time set at the time of Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee in 1887 - and each year the audience seems to grow bigger. Although the first performance on Sunday 14 July had an audience of no more than 70 people, the two subsequent performances on Sunday 4 and Sunday 25 August were hugely popular and each saw about 170 people join us in the warm sunshine on Corfe Common to enjoy not only marvellous views of the castle ruins, but also to follow the tale of Inspector Sidney Truman and help him solve the riddle of who murdered his colleague Herbert Harris.

Congratulations to all who took part in this very enjoyable and successful venture, especially Peter, who gave us the idea, and wrote, produced and starred in this year's mystery.

Some of the audience commented on returning each year to enjoy this event, so plans are already being made for a fourth Murder Mystery Walk next summer - possibly with a medieval setting during the troubled times when Stephen and Matilda disputed the English throne. As Inspector Truman said, Corfe Castle seems to be "fast becoming the murder capital of Dorset"!

JUBILEE PLAY

"WHO RULES BRITANNIA? THE STORY SO FAR..."

Written and produced by David Kemp, Double Act's offering for the Queen's Golden Jubilee will be performed three times. During the Jubilee Fayre on Monday 3 June in the Castle there will be two performances at about 11 am and about 3 pm, each taking about 45 minutes; and on Tuesday 4 June there will be final chance to enjoy this light-headed entertainment as part of the Patriotic evening.

MURDER MYSTERY WALK 2002

Rehearsals are under way for this summers Murder Mystery Walk - this year set in the 19th century, at the time of Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee. The walk itself, taking a different route from last year, will be on Corfe Common to the south of the village giving stunning views of the surrounding countryside and the Castle in particular.

The dress rehearsal will be on Sunday 30 June at 2.30 pm to which locals are invited to attend for a half price preview. The three performances, starting at 2.30 pm from West Street Car Park, will be on Sundays 14 July, 4 August and 25 August, at the same price as previously - £2 for adults and £1 for children. Let's hope the sun shines on us again this summer to make this years production another resounding success!

STONE PLAY - "STORM CHILD"

This year’s November production has now been written, critically read and edited, and is now "ready to go"! The Producer will be Ann Gaudin, with Leigh Skene as Production Assistant. The first readings of the play will be in the Village Hall on Monday 10 June at 7 pm and also on Monday 17 June at 7 pm. Casting will take place along with rehearsals continuing on Monday evenings until mid-July and re-commencing at the beginning of September on Sunday afternoons as well as Monday evenings. The performance dates will be Thursday 21, Friday 22, and Saturday 23 November.

If you'd like to take part in this wonderful new production, come along on 10 and 17 June and/or contact Ann on 556148 especially if you're the young man we're looking for to play the hero character - one is being seriously head-hunted as I write!!

CHICHESTER FESTIVAL THEATRE "CABARET" - SATURDAY 7 SEPTEMBER

Chichester Festival Theatre, set in beautiful parkland in the historic cathedral city of Chichester, is the venue for our theatre trip this year, and "Cabaret" is the production we are going to see there on Saturday 7 September. As part of the celebratory season of plays and musicals for the Theatre's 40th anniversary, they are presenting this classic musical, based on the play by John Van Druten and stories by Christopher Isherwood, which promises to be a lavish production featuring some of the most loved show tunes.

With the performance starting at 2.30 pm, we thought it would be an excellent idea to combine a visit to Chichester with a visit to the Roman Palace at Fishbourne. The start time will be slightly later because the journey will not be as long as the one to London, - and the getting-home time slightly earlier - than previous years. COFFEE MORNING

Please broadcast this event and ask your friends to come along. Remember we not only need cakes, bric-a-brac, good clothes, books and raffle prizes but also folk to come and purchase them!

`PANTOMIME PIE'

The echoes of `Pantomime Pie' have not yet died away. It was so good to see Eileen Van Lelyfeld's letter of appreciation in the `Advertiser' and we thank her very much for writing it. Eileen sent Ann a copy of the original letter which is too long to print here but may, of course, be seen on request. This is probably the first letter of recognition we have had in a local paper and will be kept for our records. We have also received a report from the organisers of the Pantomime Competition, which we entered for the first time last year. We were favourably reviewed, but as we were the first of the Christmas entertainments to be seen, we have no idea of the standard of performance from other groups and the full results will not be known for a few more weeks.

DAVID'S JUBILEE ENTERTAINMENT

Rehearsals have already started for `WHO RULES BRITANNIA?' and the casting will soon be known. It was wise to have started rehearsing so early in the year, as the production needs to be very slick. All forty monarchs are introduced and dispatched within eight pages of A4. At the moment we have two groups of eight performers, experimenting with the text, which is proving great fun. There are songs, rhymes, a couple of crowns and a flip over display board so that if any member of the audience has taken rather long to blink, he is able to catch up instantly. It has been suggested that we wear our monogrammed black polo shirts for the performances - Double Act bought extra shirts for an occasion such as this - so there will be as little fuss as possible over costuming.

Remember: performance dates are 3rd & 4th June.

MURDER MYSTERY WALK 2002

The story outline of the play was described in the last Newsletter. Peter has now completed the script. It can now be disclosed that one member of the cast is shot and dies on the Common. This year the action follows a southerly route on the Common rather than the northerly route taken in the past two years. The cast includes four men, one being a small part for a `villager', two women and a child. If you are interested in taking part in the walk, please contact Peter.

THE STONE PLAY

The first draft of the `Stone Play' has now been completed and the next meeting will be to look for errors in chronology and to tighten the dialogue. The process will be repeated a couple more times, - if not more. We hope the next four months will give us enough time to adjust the dialogue to our satisfaction. Lyn, Chris Pullen's wife, has offered to be our critical `reader'. We have a `Double Act’ follower who always asks what our next production is going to be. He first came to see and very much enjoyed, `Purbeck Line Up'. He should not be disappointed this autumn. The play's name is still uncertain.. `Halswell that Ends Well' was suggested, but it was felt this was a little too easy!

THEATRE VISIT

We are thinking of making a change this year instead of going to the Globe. David is finding out what will be included in the Chichester Summer Season. The suggestion is that we visit the Fishbourne Roman Palace in the morning and the theatre in the afternoon. The Globe is performing `Twelfth Night', `A Midsummer Night's Dream' and an especially commissioned play `The Golden Ass'. Please let a member of the Committee know if you have any other suggestions.

BARN DANCE

Barry is negotiating for a Barn Dance to be held in Corfe Castle Village Hall in the autumn. Watch out for the date and invite your friends to come along.

MEROX SHIRTS

One or two people have expressed interest in buying a Double Act monogrammed shirt after having seen others wearing them. Ann says she would like to order no less than a dozen items at a time. There are probably other members who would like a shirt too and those who would like to order a different garment or colour. Let Ann know.

COMMITTEE MEMBERS

There was an error made in the last Newsletter concerning elected members at the AGM. Barry Stocks was elected and not Nikki Haswell as reported. We are very pleased to welcome Barry to the Committee. Catherine Restarick was elected as our Junior Member but her family has now returned to Cumbria so we would like to invite nominations for her replacement. Speak to a member of the Committee!

The Restarick/Lightowler family will be greatly missed. Catherine joined us as soon as the family moved to Corfe and has been an active and enthusiastic member ever since. Lawrence was beginning to enjoy himself in his first part in `Pantomime Pie' and Clare spent hours painting our most effective scenery. PANTOMIME PIE

22, 23, and 24 NOVEMBER 2001 at 1.30 PM, PLUS 2.30 PM ON 24th

We took some flour and currants and suet. Added some sultanas and lard, an apple or two and a bit oh peel, sugar, oranges and cinnamon, and mixed them all up, to produce our very own "Pantomime Pie".

Nikki says - Things are realty beginning to come together well now and as we count down the last two weeks to the show, please throw yourselves into me final rehearsals and 1 am sure we will put on the best panto ever! So don't forget to drag an your friends and family along and sell lots of tickets!

There will be an after-show party for cast and backstage crew after the Saturday evening performance - bring food and drink to share as usual. And on the day after the show there will be an equally important party - lots oh people are needed for a cleaning-up party during the day on Sunday 25th - Peter would greatly appreciate as many people as possible turning up to help return the Village Hall to its usual state for as much time as they can spare please.

 JUBILEE PLAY

David has been busy writing a short entertainment entitled "Who Rules Britannia?" for the Jubilee celebrations next year. Lasting about half an hour and chronicling all the British monarchs since 1006 in irreverent and humorous style, it will involve eight players, and the hope is that there will be two teams of players to perform it twice each day over the Jubilee bank holiday next June in the Castle grounds. If you're interested in partaking in this project come along to our first meeting in the new year on Monday 7 January at 7 pm in the Village Mall.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

The AGM took place on Sunday 7 October in the British Legion. Alter three years in office, Ann stood down as Chairman, and Peter Smith was elected as Chairman. Leigh was re-elected Treasurer, and the position of Secretary remained empty with me committee opting to rotate the role of minute secretary. This year’s committee consists of Peter (Chairman), Leigh (Treasurer), Ann, David, Christine, Maryrose, Judith, Linda, Nikki and Teresa.

STONE PLAY

Ann says - In the last ten years we have written several plays, the two most recent being "Purbeck Line Up!" in 1996 and "The Mad Miller or Wareham" in 1999 though or course the latter was adapted from a published story. Next year (or the year after) we hope to produce another play devised and written by ourselves. The original idea was to write another documentary about the local stone industry, but as three other plays had been written about local history or industries, the documentary gradually developed a story of its own, at first as a Romeo and Juliet tragedy, then, after a great deal of discussion, as an action filled romance. So now, the story in no way shows the development of the stone industry, although the stone industry is central to the story.

For the present project, five people with an interest in story telling and playwriting got together. The first task was to decide the period in which the story should be told. The late 18th and early 19th century looked promising.

England and France were at war, although smuggling was practised by many locals including quarrymen; Jesty was investigating the efficacy of smallpox inoculations; there was considerable demand for Portland and Purbeck stone, so the quarries were busy; the Reverend Bell of Swanage was promoting Sunday Schools, so that children might learn to read the Bible. The Navy press gangs were operating at sea ports, and way back in 1786, the "Haleswell", an East India Company ship, was wrecked in a storm off the Purbeck coast. Here, we thought, was a period full of potential.

The next thing was to outline our story and make sure the background events were chronologically accurate. This entailed visits to libraries and various other sites including museums. We also interviewed local historians. We wanted to include old customs such as the Langton Kissing Day and the Marblers' meeting and football game. The story then had to be divided into scenes. As with any story, the introduction (or first scene) and the last scene are most important; the first scene must catch the imagination, and the end scene encourage the audience to go home talking about the play. The playwright has another challenge - to make sure his audience returns after the interval! Scenes have to be constructed so that events are condensed yet the story advances as naturally as possible. Characters may discuss the past or present or anticipate the future, and at the same time reveal facets of their personalities or attitudes towards others.

At this point main characters have to be thought out more fully, though their names and status are already known. The story line and the characters evolve together but now their relationships, social circumstances, attitudes, ages, mannerisms and likely reactions to what takes place during the play must be well thought out so that the writers know the limitations. We made two false assumptions at the beginning of our investigations and no doubt we will discover more; it is surprising how many inconsistencies can be missed after several readings and even when actors are well into rehearsals! So we will be on the alert - and we very much hope you will enjoy the play once it has been written.

MURDER MYSTERY WALKS

By overwhelming popular demand another bloody murder will take place in Corfe Castle next summer! This time it is the Golden Jubilee Year - Queen Victoria's, 1881 of course - and the country is in the grip of a terrible drought that

is ruining the harvest. Apart from the Jubilee celebrations throughout the far-flung parts of the British Empire, the first Colonial Conference is taking place in London and delegates have been seen enjoying the Purbeck countryside. Even now there is deep unrest in Ireland with riots against the home Rule and Land Law Bills a regular occurrence. Rumours of a Naval treaty for Britain to protect

Italy from the French fleet are circulating, and Cecil Rhodes has gained control of the Kimberley diamond fields. At home the women's suffrage movement is gathering momentum, and Sherlock Holmes has made his debut in "A Study in Scarlet". All these elements are drawn inexorably, along the recently opened Swanage Railway, towards a deadly climax in the village of Corfe Castle under the gaze of the great romantic ivy-covered ruin.

Inspector Sidney Truman has been dispatched by Scotland Yard to ensure that any rumoured local unrest does not affect the imminent visit of a member of the royal family along the new railway line to Swanage. All he has found so far is a peaceful rural village going about its daily affairs as it has for centuries - but history has proved that appearances can be deceptive! Will he have a peaceful constitutional around Corfe after his lunch? No chance! Espionage, spies, intrigue, mystery and of course death await just around the corner!

MURDER MYSTERY WALK

Ann Gaudin writes:

For our first Murder Mystery performance this summer on Sunday 16 July the weather gave us concern with downpours in the morning, but by 2.00 pm the sun shone and by 2.30 pm those still in macs were roasting. David Kemp tallied our audience as ninety. That was good news and in line with our audience numbers last year. After only six or so in our preview audiences, only Philly Byrde, who had not experienced our walks of last year, was mentally agape, but she was better at hiding her amazement than we had been on our first walk.

A great deal of thought has gone into changing the story-line from last year's play; it takes place in the seventeenth and not the tenth century after all. Chris Pullen has spun an intriguing plot There is no `body’, the victim having been discovered in the Cofe stream a few days previously with a dagger in his chest The Justice of the Peace (Dougal Dixon) has come from Dorchester to investigate and elects a jury of twelve from the audience, including a foreman. On Sunday it looked as if all the jury members were going to be aged ten or under, but in the end it included one or two UK adults, plus a Dane and a Frenchman. At each stage the audience is encouraged to question the suspects, which is perhaps more nerve-racking for the actors than to be quizzed quietly as they walk from one scene to another, though this may occur as well. It is interesting to hear that some well-known actors turn down invitations to perform at the Globe Theatre, as they feel vulnerable being able to see their audience so clearly!

This year there were four main characters and a guard. They included an officer of the Parliamentary Army who has come to help in the slighting of the Castle (Leigh Skene); Lady Bankes' cousin (Linda Peters) who is concerned with the preservation of the family's furniture (much of which seems to be missing) and a serving wench (Philly Byrde), who works in one of the Corfe alehouses. As the plot develops we find that they are all dependent on the murdered man, one Captain John McManus.

Although some time was spent investigating different venues to set the scenes, the conclusion was that Peter had chosen the best route last year. The Castle is in view for much of the time as a dramatic backdrop and it was superb on Sunday the 16th seen against rain clouds and caught in bright sunlight. One couple in our audience, who visit Corfe every year and came on our walk last year, were delighted to find there was another Murder Mystery advertised while they were still in the district. They bought a Murder Mystery badge for both years and enquired what we might be doing in 2002.

Congratulations everybody; the playwright, actors and not least Peter Smith who designs the posters and leaflets, nips out at the weekend to put them up and takes them down again on Sunday evening. It is through him that we attract such excellent audiences.

If we can devise a third story for next year - any ideas? - we may achieve international fame!

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

The AGM this year will take place on the afternoon of Sunday 7 October at 2.30 pm in the British Legion, Corfe Castle.

This meeting should not take too long and will include a report on the last year together with election of the officers and committee for next year. It will then be followed by that afternoon's rehearsals. You need to have paid your subs for the coming year by then, so that you are an official member of the group and therefore able to vote.

I am sorry to end on some very sad news. Some of you may have already heard that Jack died suddenly on Sunday 29 July. Jack took part so enthusiastically in all of our productions that I am sure many of us will have happy memories of him. A real character of the village - he will be sadly missed.

PANTOMIME PIE

Casting and rehearsals start next month for this autumn's production "Pantomime Pie" with casting taking place in Corfe Castle Village Hall from 7.00 - 8.30 pm on:-

Pantomime Pie is an original presentation including pantomime and children's characters from a variety of rhymes and pantos. Mary Rose has kindly offered the use of her lovely garden for a summer picnic on Saturday 30 June from 7.00 to 10.00 pm. MURDER MYSTERY WALK

Rehearsals are in progress for this year’s Murder Mystery Walk. Written by Chris Pullen and set in 1646 at the time of the Civil War, this is a story of intrigue and murder about the mysterious death of a Parliamentary Officer. There will be preview for Double Act members on Sunday 17 June and a locals’ half-price preview on Sunday 1 July. The actual performances will take place on Sunday afternoons on:

...all starting at 2.30 pm from West Street Car Park, with ticket prices at £2 for adults and £1 for children.

FUTURE PLANS - 2002 AND BEYOND

Much research is under way for a future production surrounding the Purbeck stone industry. The emerging outline plot is set in 1806/7 in the middle of the Napoleonic wars to feature not only the stone industry but social condition and reformers as well as that other local `industry’ smuggling. Whether this will form the 2002 or 2003 presentation, only time will tell. We have a few further thoughts on productions - have any of you any more? We will be discussing this at the next committee meeting.

Ideas are also welcome from anyone for next year’s workshops from January to May. Please relay any requests to a member of the committee.

"1066 AND ALL THAT"

Christine writes:

"1066 and All That was a `memorable' Double Act production to round up the Millennium Year.

It was the most ambitious show musically that we have done, and the first few weeks of interminable `Going Home' paid off in the long run. It also involved the most costume and character changes, which were all coped with admirably. The audience participation and appreciation were exceptional, and, to crown it all, the profits of over £800 were phenomenal - so all-in-all a show of superlatives that any amateur group could be proud of.

I think the thing I enjoyed most was seeing some members, young and old, improving dramatically before my eyes, which took further leaps forward once into costume, and then, with the added adrenaline surge of an audience, pushed

into new realms. Certainly an event to go down in the `annals of history' - which it now has, as a page in the Millennium diary for Coils Castle.

Thanks to everyone who participated and helped to make it the undoubted success it was."

And thank you, Chris, for being such a super producer.

Double Act are holding a Coffee Morning at Corfe Castle Village Hall on Saturday 10 February starting at 10.30 am, so we are looking for donations of bric-a-brac, books, clean clothes, cakes and raffle prizes. REDUCED SHAKESPEARE COMPANY

The Reduced Shakespeare Company is presenting `The Complete Works of William Shakespeare(abridged)' at Poole Arts Centre, and 20 seats have been secured for Double Act on Monday evening 26 March. I still have two seats to fill, so if you would like to join us for a "riotous romp through all 37 of Shakespeare's plays in just 97 minutes", please phone me on 01929 556432 to secure your seat. It starts at 7.45 p.m., and costs £11 for adults and £5 for students.

MURDER MYSTERY WALK

Chris Pullen is currently writing this year’s script on the theme of local history at the time of the Civil War. The dates for the production have been agreed in July and August, and hopefully casting should take place before Easter. Keep in touch for further details, or look on the website.

PANTOMIME PIE

Work is already apace for next Novembers production `Pantomime Pie' to be produced by Nikki Haswell. A small editing group have been meeting to finalise the script, so that we will be ready for casting at the beginning of June, with rehearsals commencing on Monday evenings in June and July. Watch for further details.

GLOBE THEATRE VISIT

This year's Globe Theatre visit will take place on Saturday 1 September to see their production of `Macbeth'. Ann has booked 51 seats for Double Act, and is now taking reservations from eager theatre-goers for this production. We decided to soak the atmosphere of a dramatic tragedy (one that most people will know)in this unique theatre this year. The coach will leave the Purbeck area at approximately 7.30 I 8.00 am, and the play starts at 2.00 p.m., so there will be about three hours to visit either the Globe Exhibition, the nearby Tate Modem, take in some of the sights of London, and to lunch before enjoying the production.

Ticket prices are:

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

The A G M took place on Sunday 1 October at 2.30 p.m. in the Methodist Hall. Chairman's and Treasurers reports were given and it was resolved to bring forward the start of our financial year to 1 August (from 15 August). Many

grateful thanks to Frank Collinson for auditing our accounts. The previous officers were re-elected, as were most of the committee, and Fuchsia Arnold joined the committee; which therefore consists of Ann Gaudin (Chairman), Leigh Skene (Treasurer), Peter Smith (Secretary/Vice-Chairman), with Maryrose Bray, Tina Hicks, Judith Jenkins, David and Christine Kemp, Linda Peters, Jack Pragnell and Fuchsia Arnold.

Remember when we had a go at their version of Shakespeare earlier this year - well, R S C are visiting Poole Arts Centre from Monday 26 - Thursday 29 March, so instead of an April meeting, we thought an evening trip to Poole(for the over-10's) would be an excellent idea. We thought it would be an excellent idea to put on a pantomime next autumn - 22, 23 and 24 November. Whether this will be Pantomime Pie (written and adapted locally) or a commercially written one, it should be wonderful fun for children and adults alike. We are hoping in a couple of year’s time to do something on the Purbeck stone industry. 1066 AND ALL THAT

With casting almost completed in June, Monday evenings in June and July saw us rehearsing the songs to be included in "1066 And All That!" this autumn, as well as starting on the acting in some scenes. Rehearsal schedules have been issued and will recommence in earnest on Monday 4 September with two rehearsals a week - Monday evenings 7.00 - 9.00 pm and Sunday afternoons 2.30 - 5.00 pm, mostly in Corfe Castle Village Hall (but check your schedule carefully because some may be in the Methodist Hall). Chris Kemp, the producer, reminds everyone to please check the schedule carefully to see when they are needed for rehearsal, to be prompt so that we can avoid too much wasted time, and to let her know in advance on (01929)480007 if you cannot attend any of your scheduled rehearsals.

It's not too late to be part of this year's funny and lively production. As always we'd be especially pleased to hear from any men out there! Contact Chris if you'd - or you know someone who'd - like to join in.

With regard to costume, we intend to use a great many from our vast store of costumes from previous productions, but we are still looking for various items (especially HATS and WIGS from many periods of English history), and in particular Roman soldier costumes, Tudor dress for both ladies and gents, Cavalier costumes for several gents,early 19th century naval costumes, especially 3 tricorne hats, and Victorian Army in India costumes - officer and soldiers. Please phone Chris, Dawn or Linda if you, or you know of anyone, who can help with any of these. To save Dawn from making more costumes, we may well be hiring some (especially the fancy, complicated ones), and could well be involving cast members in obtaining/acquiring/and even making their own outfit.

MEDIEVAL MURDER MYSTERY WALK

Well, what an thoroughly enjoyable and incredibly successful time we are experiencing with the Medieval Murder Mystery Walk. After a sparsely attended preview on 2 July, we were surprised and delighted to have an audience of approximately 90 people on both our subsequent productions on 16 July and 6 August. For this event the advertising is definitely working, and we've had some really positive feedback from the audience, both local and holidaymaker. If you've missed it so far, come and join the last one later this month - Sunday 27 August leaving West Street Car Park at 2.30 pm. Much of the credit for the hard work - writing, directing, etc - that has gone into this must go to Peter Smith, who also acts along with Ann, Judith and Leigh. Congratulations to all four for a superbly successful production! Audiences are asking if we put this event on every year - so we're currently wondering about putting a similar version on next year. More actors needed please to take part in this wonderful venture.

GLOBE VISIT

September's annual visit to the Globe Theatre is fast approaching. Most people have paid Ann for their tickets, and schedules of information for the day are enclosed with this newsletter to those of you who are going on this trip. To date there are two seats still unfilled, so if you know of anyone who'd like to be included in this year's visit on Sunday 3 September to see the penultimate performance of "The Tempest" with Vanessa Redgrave as Prospero, please contact Ann on 556146 as soon as possible.
